Facts, Figures and Background
Every day it is estimated that 3, travellers and guests go through the Berlin Hauptbahnhof (central station).
1,1 Local and Long-distance lines can be found at the station, in addition to the 15, square metres of commercial space. The Hauptbahnhof is growing as a European interface and the spacious, light architecture has come to characterise the city’s landscape.
The Glass Hall is 321 meters long; this carries the S-Bahn (City Train) on the East-West direction. The North-South direction of the station runs 16 metres long and 4 metres wide, and crosses the station hall. The glass roof is a high-tech construction. It was computer-designed and constructed. 23 Steel trusses maintain an arc, 16 metres high and 59 to 68 metres wide, involving 85 kilometres of steel support. Large openings in the ceilings of all floors allow daylight to reach the lower tracks. Two towering buildings, 46-metre-high office buildings, span the S-Bahn. Both towers are visible structures of the stations façade, and strengthen the stations image as a crossroads. Berlin Hauptbahnhof is famous for it’s quick exits. 54 escalators, 6 panoramic glass lifts and numerous fixed stairways lead quickly through a working area of 43x43 metres. Thus, travellers need, on arrival, departure or transfer, only a short barrier-free walk.
TRAVEL CONNECTIONS:
The Hauptbahnhof connects all long-distance lines with the
S-Bahn and regional trains. At the southern stations, and Gesundbrunnen (station close to Hauptbahnhof) there are recently additional long-distance lines and regional connections. The new regional connections are also in the stations of Junfernheide, Potsdamer Platz, Teltow and Lichterfelde Ost.
Also, there are many connection possibilities with
mass transit (Bus, Tram, etc). There are 7 bus routes, including the TXL-bus (main bus direct to and from Tegel Airport), all travel via the main rail connections.
